About Code 39

REFERENCE

Code 39 encodes uppercase letters, digits, and a small set of symbols without a mandatory checksum. It was one of the first alphanumeric barcodes and remains common in defense, automotive, and inventory systems.

What a valid Code 39 looks like

  • Only uppercase A-Z, digits 0-9, space, and - . $ / + % are encodable. Lowercase or punctuation outside that set will fail.
  • Start and stop characters are asterisks; the generator adds them for you.
  • No checksum by default. If your scanner requires one, enable mod-43.
  • Quiet zone: at least 10 module widths each side.
