About Code 128

REFERENCE

Code 128 is a high-density linear barcode capable of encoding the full 128-character ASCII set. It is widely used in shipping, packaging, and inventory because of its compactness and automatic subset switching.

What a valid Code 128 looks like

  • Any ASCII character (0-127) is valid. Length is unbounded but long payloads widen the symbol quickly.
  • The encoder automatically chooses subsets A, B, and C - you do not add FNC or shift characters manually.
  • Quiet zone: at least 10 module widths on each side.
  • For GS1 data use the GS1-128 page, not plain Code 128.
