About QR codes
QR Code was invented by Denso Wave in 1994 to track automotive parts and is now standardised as ISO/IEC 18004. Three finder patterns anchor the corners so a scanner can read it from any angle, and Reed-Solomon error correction lets the code decode even when part of it is damaged, dirty or covered.
Error correction
Four levels trade capacity for resilience. Level L survives about 7% damage, M about 15%, Q about 25% and H about 30%. Use M for most uses and H when you plan to print a logo over the centre.
Versions and capacity
Sizes run from Version 1 (21 by 21 modules) to Version 40 (177 by 177). At the lowest error correction a single code holds up to 7,089 digits, 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes. The generator picks the smallest version that fits your data.
Quiet zone
The blank margin around the code must be at least 4 modules wide so a scanner can separate it from the background. The quiet zone control above will not go below 4.
Common payloads
URLs (https://...), Wi-Fi credentials (WIFI:T:WPA;S:ssid;P:pass;;), email (mailto:...), phone numbers (tel:...), SMS, vCard contact cards, geolocation and plain text.
