About EAN-8

REFERENCE

EAN-8 is a compact 8-digit variant of EAN-13 used when a full 13-digit code will not fit on a small package. It encodes only a manufacturer and item number plus a check digit.

What a valid EAN-8 looks like

  • Exactly 8 digits, numeric only, with a mod-10 check digit.
  • The prefix range is allocated by GS1 for space-constrained packages. Reserve it for items where a 13-digit code genuinely will not fit.
  • Quiet zone: at least 7 modules on each side.
